International Center for Mathematics
The SUSTech International Center for Mathematics, officially established on February 22, 2019, is a scientific research center funded by Shenzhen Municipal Government and located at Southern University of Science and Technology. The Scientific Director is Fields Medalist Efim Zelmanov.
It aims to advance scientific research in pure mathematics as well as applied and computational mathematics in Shenzhen, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond. The Center will focus on important research fields in both pure and applied mathematics. Its primary goal is to promote basic research in mathematics and advance interdisciplinary research of mathematics in life science, information science, engineering, and finance, etc.
The governing of the Center will follow international standards for major global mathematics centers. It provides a first-class research environment for researchers and visitors alike, hosting annual thematic programs and focused research groups.
Research Institute of Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (RITAS)
The Research Institute of Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (RITAS) was officially announced by the Shenzhen Municipality on 1 November 2019, with a total investment of 100 million RMB over five years. It is led by Turing Award Laureate, Professor Joseph Sifakis, a Distinguished Visiting Professor from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), as the Institute Director, and assisted by Professor Xin Yao as the Executive Director of RITAS. Currently, RITAS has 30 professors (PIs), of which 8 are IEEE fellows and over 70 research fellows, postdoctoral researchers, and research students. RITAS’s mission is to carry out both fundamental and applied research in trustworthy AI systems using a highly interdisciplinary approach by bringing people together from artificial intelligence, computer science, system engineering, mathematics, operations research, cognitive science, and psychology. It covers five major areas, including autonomous driving, smart cities, AI and medicine, machine learning systems, and trustworthy software systems. The common theme cutting across all these areas is trustworthiness --- how can we develop trustworthy autonomous systems? What does trustworthiness mean for an application scenario? How to measure trustworthiness? These are some of the primary research questions that will be addressed by RITAS. RITAS has three essential pillars to support its growth and long-term sustainability, including the cultivation of research talents, international cooperation, and knowledge transfer to industry. It recruits international talents with the most competitive pay packages and ample research funding. It has an open and stimulating environment for young researchers to grow and develop their careers. It aspires to become a world-class research institute in trustworthy autonomous systems and their applications.
Shenzhen Grubbs Institute
As an international research institution supported by Shenzhen government, Shenzhen Grubbs Institute will attract top Chinese and foreign scientists and their research teams to participate in cooperation, with Professor Grubbs's international influence in the field of catalysis and materials, aiming to develop into a fundamental research center with Chinese characteristics and profound global impact. By building the Homogeneous Catalysis platform in Organic Synthesis and Polymer Synthesis and Polymer Synthesis and Characterization, the institute will focus on innovation and scientific research, and strive for industrial achievements to promote the upgrading and transformation of Shenzhen-related industries.
Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering
As the top ten fundamental research institutes for scientific and technological innovation of Shenzhen, IQSE bases itself on the strategic positioning of “quantum technology” as the national technology of prioritized development. It was unveiled in January 2018 counting on the special fund of Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Committee and Commission and the support of Southern University of Science and Technology.
In response to the “innovation-driven” national strategy, Shenzhen implemented a "new round of innovation and development strategy layout to accelerate the development of international science and technology center for industrial innovation", and launched the “Top Ten Movement Plan” on scientific and technological innovation in early 2017, which made quantum science one of the ten major key development directions based on the national development strategy that lists "quantum technology" as a priority. The Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as IQSE) is one of the first three of the "Top Ten Fundamental Research Institutes" built in Shenzhen.
IQSE concentrates on future information materials, quantum computing and simulation, quantum precision measurement and quantum engineering applications; it gives equal emphasis on fundamental researches and industrial development by prioritizing both the cutting-edge scientific difficulties in fundamental science, and today’s major demand for technology and industrialization.
Future Network Research Institute of Southern University of Science and Technology
The Institute of Future Networks (IFN) is committed to making breakthroughs in core network technologies such as the new generation of network architecture, commercial network operating systems for operators, future network core routing, and switching equipment. Other technologies include future network test facilities, core processing algorithms and platforms of big network data, integrated ground-air-space network architectures, Industrial Internet differentiated network architectures, and core equipment.
Under the leadership of Professor Yunjie Liu (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering), IFN is building a world-class network discipline and an industry-university-research platform centered on Shenzhen’s unique features. It will seek to achieve breakthroughs in vital technologies of future networking. IFN shall also serve social and economic development while meeting the demands of major national strategies.
Currently, IFN has 18 young scientists with overseas academic and industrial backgrounds.
IFN is building the “Future Networks Test and Application Environment of the Greater Bay Area” of Pengcheng Laboratory, Shenzhen (Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Shenzhen Cyberspace Science and Technology). They aim to build a customized, efficient, on-demand and extended regional networks across 13 cities of the Greater Bay Area. It is based on white-box network equipment, innovative application software-defined networks, network virtualization, network operating systems, and other vital technologies to optimize the network architecture. The regional network will meet the demand of the Industrial Internet and other applications by breaking the rigidity and non-guaranteed services of traditional IP networks. It will also serve major national strategies such as “Internet+,” “The Belt and Road Initiative,” “Made in China 2025,” and the construction of the Greater Bay Area.
IFN will cooperate with Peking University & CCTV as they build the Future Networks Test and Application Environment of the Greater Bay Area. Together, they will develop the first fully 4K/8K/VR immersive demonstration video service in the world.
Aerospace Propulsion Institute at SUSTech
Aerospace engine has long been considered as the finest industrial artwork, encompassing a wide collection of top-notch techniques of modern industrial manufacturing. Independent and self-sufficient development of aerospace engine is of the national core interests. President Xi instructed at several occasions that it is essential to seek for a rapid and significant breakthrough in this area. In response to the national demand, the Aerospace Propulsion Institute (API) of SUSTech has established in 2017 with the goal to develop the educational platform and carry out cutting-edge researches in aerospace engine. The API based at Shenzhen, the heart of the Great Bay Area of China, aims to become the primary regional research facility with the top-class team and platforms for advancing and delivering aerospace propulsion technologies on both the front lines of fundamental and applied researches. Starting from aerospace engine for aviation, researches at the API will progressively cover propulsion systems for various applications that complement regional and national needs.
